After completing his biology undergraduate degree in Canada, he landed in Hawaii in 1996 to pursue his passion as a marine scientist. At the University of Hawaii, he completed his master’s degree studying humpback whales followed by a doctoral degree in 2010 on manta rays, only the second in the world at the time. In 2004, he co-founded The Hawaii Association for Marine Education and Research (HAMER), a not-for-profit with a mission of protecting Hawaii’s marine resources. Aside from his continued involvement to learn about and protect manta rays in Hawaii and abroad, Mark was the Project Manager for nine years with HDR, managing the Navy’s Marine Protected Species Monitoring Program in the Pacific. More recently Mark turned his focus on regenerative design solutions, becoming an associate with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), a certified permaculture designer, and an ambassador for the Living Building Challenge (LBC), educating professionals and policy makers on the world’s most stringent green building performance standard. As co-founder of 3-P Consulting, Mark is dedicated to implementing proven, regenerative design solutions to fix our most pressing social and environmental issues.
